CHAPTER EIGHT

The three outlaws designated by Mahaffery trudged up to the pass, taking with them wood from one of the several massive woodpiles around Texas Gulch, the fuel set aside to get an isolated mining camp through a long and cold winter. As they entered the pass, the shadowy figure that had followed Emmett Fish moved, hesitated, then moved again, slipping back toward the mountains.

Minutes later, as the flames of two bonfires rose, illuminating the gap, the unseen man watched from outside the circle of light. For a long time he waited, then at length turned and quietly moved farther into the darkness and away from the light.
